School Garden Programs in Cleveland, Ohio | Food Strong
Food Strong, a Cleveland-based nonprofit, has been transforming education through school garden programs in Cleveland, Ohio since 2016. Founded by Sara Continenza, our organization collaborates closely with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) to create a hands-on School Garden Toolkit and curriculum aligned with Ohio’s Learning Standards.
Hands-On Learning Through School Garden Programs in Cleveland, Ohio
Our garden-based programs are now active in over a dozen public schools across Cleveland. Students engage in the full cycle of urban gardening—from designing and planting to maintaining and harvesting fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
Each weekly or bi-weekly session integrates:
STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math)
Hands-on nutrition education
Youth entrepreneurship training
Environmental sustainability
Social-emotional learning
Community development
Students also become Fresh Food Ambassadors, learning to educate their peers on the benefits of fresh, healthy foods as natural medicine.
Urban Agriculture Meets Public Art
To further engage students and the community, we partner with local Cleveland artists to create food-themed murals that raise awareness about healthy eating and food equity while beautifying neighborhoods. This initiative is funded by Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.
Learning Garden at Coit Road Farmers Market
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Food Strong established an outdoor Learning Garden at the Coit Road Farmers Market Urban Farm. This space hosts small-group outdoor classes, allowing students to safely learn and apply urban agriculture practices.
Students gain real-world business experience by selling their produce at local farmers markets as part of our expanding entrepreneurship curriculum. A recent highlight includes our 2-week Fresh Camp, hosted in partnership with Refresh Collective and funded by the Garden Club of Cleveland.

a testimonial about our Lead Educator Stephanie
“My students are learning so much, getting outside, and being exposed to things they never would have otherwise. Stephanie is amazing. She is so organized, prepared, thoughtful, and a truly gifted educator. I’ve collaborated with countless non-profits and outside organizations throughout my career and yours is among the most organized and successful in engaging with students. Many partners really struggle to understand what my English Learners need in order to understand and Stephanie just gets it. She simplifies and slows down in just the ways they need. Her passion is palpable”.
